Even as I write this account by way of an introduction to myself, I am also making a case for why it makes sense for you as a Veteran or an active duty personnel to think of working with me. I am going to talk about my upbringing and why I have a compulsion to serve those that have sacrificed for us. As unlikely as it may sound initially, you will discover that the martial traditions run deep in my blood even though I never personally enlisted.
I grew up in India and come from a clan known as the Garhwalis – a people largely from the Himalayan mountain regions in Uttar Pradesh bordering China. Whereas most of you would have heard of the Gurkhas of Nepal what you may not know is that the Garhwalis were just as ferocious, dedicated and valiant. To make a long story short I grew up surrounded by people that were in the military. The accompanying link gives a short history of the Garhwal Rifles. (http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/world/india/rgt-garhwal.htm) ….
My educational journey has taken me from Trinidad & Tobago to Canada to Japan to the United States – I did my Masters in International Management from “Thunderbird – the Garvin school of International Management in Glendale, Arizona. My Major was International Accounting and Finance and I did a Minor in Japanese. Along the way I started studying Shotokan Karate and had the opportunity to train (a euphemism for getting my butt kicked) in all the above mentioned countries.
After graduating from Thunderbird I moved to New Orleans got my “green card” and established my career in the field of Investment and Financial advice. New Orleans is also the home of probably one of the greatest Karate teachers alive – Sensei Takayuki Mikami. I trained under Mr. Mikami for 15 years and earned my 2nd degree black belt with him.
New Orleans was wonderful to me – I married a New Orleans native in 1989 and had our son in 1995. My career was generally flourishing and over 23 years I have amassed experience in trading commodity futures and also in assisting people develop investment and financial plans.
Then came Katrina – we moved to safety with my wife, son, 3 dogs and a parrot. We took about 30 minutes to pack up into this car, fully expecting to be back in 2 – 3 days. Without going into too many details there were some “change of plans.” We came to Cincinnati on Sep. 2nd 2005 and have been here since then. The choice of Cincinnati was because my older sister lives here.
Being of the firm belief that “things always happen for the best” I see clearly how being in a position to serve you is the best situation I could find myself in.
It is remarkable and befitting that after the most circuitous journey - a garhwali finds himself working with men and women of the military. I count my blessings and hope that if and when I get the chance to assist any of you I not only bring you much benefits but also bring honor to my family.
Finally, having lived in this country for almost 30 years; it is my belief that the contributions made by our Veterans and military is largely underappreciated.
By the same token the work that the VA does is also not fully recognized. At this point in time the VA has really “stepped up to the plate” on your behalf. The programs they offer are definitely intended and designed to be of benefit to you. If through this medium I can be of service to you then I am truly blessed.
